Julie Houck
Contemporary Artist
Julie Houck is a contemporary landscape painter whose work in oils and encaustics is deeply informed by her 17-year career as a professional location photographer. Extensive travel throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States sharpened her understanding of composition, design, and the transformative power of light. In 1995, Houck shifted her focus fully to painting, pursuing a lifelong passion rooted in direct observation of color, light, and form.
Houck trained at the Atelier of Classical Realism in San Francisco, the Academy of Fine Art in Seattle, and L’École Albert Defois in France, and studied en plein air with leading contemporary painters. Her layered, luminous landscapes distill the natural world to its most essential elements—sky, horizon, and land—capturing both place and mood.
Her work is held in the permanent collections of the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the Hawaii State Art Museum, and she is a Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society.
